- 4th One Planet Summit in cooperation with UN and World Bank hosted by France The Government of France organized the fourth ‘One Planet Summit’ on 11th January 2021, through video conferencing, which aimed at protecting the World’s biodiversity. The theme of the summit was “Let’s act together for nature!”. The Summit was organized in cooperation with the United Nations and the World Bank.
- Health Ministry Kayakalp Awards The Kayakalp Awards are presented by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare annually to the health facilities with the highest standards of sanitation and hygiene. Recently, the Kayakalp awards for the year 2019-2020 was presented. The Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIMPER) was awarded the second prize under the Kayakalp Awards scheme. JIMPER received the prize under the Group A Central Facilities category, hospitals having more than thousand beds. Earlier, it had received second place in 2018-19 and third place in 2017-18.
- MoU signed between India-UAE for Scientific and Technical Cooperation The Union Cabinet recently approved India-UAE Memorandum of Understanding for Scientific and Technical Cooperation. The MoU provides sharing of knowledge between the countries. It will also allow to share information of data from satellites, radar, tide gauges, meteorological stations. MoU also allows the countries to share knowledge of operational products for seismological and oceanic services. Cooperation in early warnings of dust and sand storms through exchange of knowledge.
- In Henley Passport Index 2021, India ranked 85th The Henley Passport Index 2021 has been released by Henley & Partners, based on the exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association. The Index presents the original ranking of the World’s most powerful passports, according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. As per the latest report, India has been ranked 85th with a visa-free score of 58. Japan has once again topped the list of being the most powerful passport in the world, for third consecutive year.
- For COVID-19 vaccine, Centre forms empowered panel under former TRAI Chief R S Sharma The Union Government has formed an empowered committee for administration of COVID-19 vaccine. The committee formation has come days ahead of the mega vaccination drive which is to start in India from 16th January 2021. This ten-member team will be headed by R S Sharma, former TRAI Chief and will include top health ministry and UIDAI officials as other members. However, the panel are free to invite eminent persons as and when required to ensure delivery of the vaccine through the Co-Win technology platform.
- 2-days Coastal Defence Exercise ‘Sea Vigil-21’ kicks off The second edition of the biennial pan-India coastal defence exercise ‘Sea Vigil-21’ has been organized on 12-13th January 2021 by the Indian Navy. The exercise will involve all the 13 coastal States and Union Territories along with other maritime stakeholders, including the fishing and coastal communities. It will take place the entire 7516 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India.
- The Licence of Maharashtra-based Vasantdada Nagari Sahakari Bank cancelled by RBI The Reserve Bank of India has cancelled the licence of Vasantdada Nagari Sahakari Bank Limited with immediate effect. Vasantdada Nagari Sahakari Bank Limited will not be allowed to conduct the business of ‘banking’, including acceptance of deposits and repayment of deposits, with effect from the close of business on 11th January 2021. The Bank has failed to comply with the requirements of Section 11(1) read with Section 56 of BR Act and thus would be unable to pay its present depositors in full in its current financial position.
- 13th India-Vietnam Defence Security Dialogue co-chaired by Defence Secretary Dr. Ajay Kumar The 13th India-Vietnam Defence Security Dialogue was held on 12th January 2021 in virtual format. The virtual event was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Dr. Ajay Kumar along with Vietnamese Sr. Lt. Genral Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Defence Minister, Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
- Pulitzer Prize-winning Author and NY Times reporter Neil Sheehan passes away at 84 Veteran American reporter and Pulitzer Prize winning author, Neil Sheehan, has passed away at 84. Mr. Sheehan was the Vietnam War Correspondent, who covered the war from 1962 to 1966 for United Press International and The New York Times. He was the author of the book titled “A Bright Shinning Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam”, which won a National Book Award and Pulitzer in 1989.
- 8 Point Action Plan to UNSC by India to combat Terrorism The External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar recently addressed the United Nations Security Council open debate. During his address, the minister proposed eight-point action plan which are – 1) All the member nations should fulfill their obligations in international counter-terrorism conventions and instruments. 2) The countries should not bring in double standards in the battle. For instance, there are countries that support terrorism by offering financial support. 3) Such countries are black listed by the international bodies such as FATF (Financial Action Task Force). 4) The working methods of the committees dealing with counter-terrorism should be reformed. 5) The enlisting and delisting of individuals and entities under the United Nations should be done objectively and not for political and religious considerations. 6) The linkages between transitional organized crime and terrorism should be addressed vigorously. 7) The FATF should continue to identify weaknesses in anti-money laundering and counter-terror financing frameworks. 8) Adequate funding should be allocated to the UN Counter terrorism bodies.
