- Government eases curbs on steel for highway construction to reduce cost On 14th February 2021, the government announced that all kinds of steel will be allowed for highways provided these meet the quality parameters. Earlier, the contract provisions required use of steel produced by primary or integrated steel producers only. The move is aimed at ensuring cost reduction in highways construction using steel.
- Supreme Court allows 100% fee collection by Rajasthan Schools The Supreme Court had stayed a Rajasthan High Court order to schools affiliated to Central and State secondary education boards to collect only 60% of the tuition fee for the lockdown period. The court allowed schools to collect entire arrears in six monthly installments from March to August 2021. It added that the management shall not debar any student from attending either online or physical classes on account of non-payment of fees.
- World Bank report on ‘Traffic Crash Injuries and Disabilities: The Burden on India Society’ On 13th February 2021, Road Transport, Highways and MSMEs Minister Nitin Gadkari released the World Bank report on ‘Traffic Crash Injuries and Disabilities: The Burden on India Society’, prepared in association with Save Life Foundation. He said in this alarming scenario the ministry will formulate policies to protect the interest of the poor and embark on several reformative steps.
- From 15th February 2021, FASTag compulsory at all Toll Plazas The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways recently issued orders to make FASTag compulsory at all Toll Plazas in effect from 15th February 2021 all across India. This decision was taken to promote fee payment using the digital mode, to reduce the waiting time and fuel consumption. It would also provide a seamless passage of vehicles through the fee plazas. As per the order, there would be no more extension of deadline.
- 11th Edition of ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav’ inaugurated On 14th February 2021, the Governor of West Bengal, Shri Jagdeep Dhankar, inaugurated the 11th edition of ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav’. The event was inaugurated in the presence of Minister of State (I/C) for Culture and Tourism, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel. It was inaugurated at Cooch Behar Palace in West Bengal. Ten editions of the festival have successfully been organized even since the festival was started in November 2015.
- Mini Museums to be set by Kerela Kerela, which is home to India’s biggest art event called Kochi-Muziris Biennale, is now aspiring to become a museum hub in the country. In that context, Dr. Venu V who is the Additional Chief Secretary, Kerela and manage the departments of Archaeology stated that the old notion with respect to the museums is needed to change. There is a need that the museums should be able to converse with the visitors specially with the youngsters. In order to comply with the objectives, the Kerela Government has launched an initiative which aims to establish and promote mini museums in state.
- Climate Change: Italy gets Green Super Ministry The Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi, has put the climate change at the centre of his plans to run Italy. He has created a super ministry to ensure a transition to green energy drives recovery in the country. The super ministry has been established with the objective of making full use of European Union funds with respect to the climate change. In the first move, the Prime Minister will redraft the Italy’s Recovery Plan.
